July 2008Stretch Marks (or Striae Distensae) Stretch marks are difficult to treat. There is hope though because of new technology that has reached the aesthetic market - Fractional Ablative Laser. Striae are common cutaneous lesions that are cosmetically displeasing to patients. They appear as atrophic or wrinkled linear bands that range from purple to pink to white. Normally this happens secondary to stretching of the skin. The distribution is quite variable but typically involves the abdomen, breasts, buttocks and skin flexures. The true etiology of striae is still controversial. Multiple treatments are needed, approximately 3 to 6 on a monthly basis. Post treatment there is some redness and mild swelling that clears in a few days. Other conditions that respond to fractional photothermolysis are, acne scars, surgery scars, Poililoderma of Civatte (red neck), melasma and fine wrinkles (including those around the mouth).
