What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a common skin disease that causes redness, papules and swelling on the face. Often referred to as “adult acne” rosacea frequently begins as a tendency to flush or blush easily. It may progress to persistent redness in the center of the face that may gradually involve the cheeks, forehead, chin and nose. When rosacea first develops the redness may come and go. Small dilated vessels also may be present due to prolonged sun exposure. Small red bumps some of which may contain pus may appear on the face. In

more advanced cases a condition called rhinophyma (bulbous nose) may develop. The condition may last for years, rarely reverses itself, and can become worse without treatment.

Controlling the triggers of Rosacea can help exacerbation. Avoid hot drinks, spicy food, caffeine and alcoholic beverages that make the face red. Practice good sun protection. Avoid cosmetics and facial products that contain alcohol. Choosing skin care products made for sensitive skin with a gentle cleansing regime is very important.

Treatment of rosacea is dependant on the grade or severity of the rosacea

including antibiotics and topical preparations.

Newer technologies now enable us to offer more variety of treatment. Using laser and pulse light sources we can close off the vascular component (dilated vessels) that supply the redness to the skin. Usually 3-5 treatments are required to adequately control the problem. Maintanence treatments are occasionally needed. Where sun damage is the cause for the rosacea a chemical compound called Levulan has proven to be helpful and allows us to treat any pre cancerous lesions at the same time.
