ASK THE PROFESSIONAL CLEANER Les Graham

June 2007

Over the past several years I have encountered a number of misconceptions about commercial carpet cleaning.  I’d like to take this opportunity to address a few.

Misconception #1:

Carpet cleaning will tie up my business for days.  It will be very inconvenient.

The reality is that a good commercial carpet cleaner will have the resources to ensure efficient care of your facility at a time least likely to affect your staff or your customers.  There are several methods available to clean carpets.  Some of them have been designed with commercial applications in mind.  A qualified professional will be able to demonstrate the best method for your situation.

Misconception #2:

If I clean my office carpets, the place will smell funny.

Regular, scheduled care of carpets helps ensure a high level of indoor air quality.  But, make sure your carpet cleaner is trained for “Commercial Carpet Maintenance”.  Stale smells after cleaning are usually associated with workmanship issues typically resulting from a lack of technical expertise.

Misconception #3:

Carpets can be cleaned too many times.  They can be damaged.

In many business environments, carpet care should be performed at least once or twice a year.  For some, monthly or bi-monthly cleaning is suggested.  Professional cleaning performed by qualified professionals will not damage your carpets.  It is similar to  changing the oil in a vehicle.  When a car gets little mileage, an oil change every 6 - 12 months may be appropriate.  If it gets  5,000 km in a month, monthly service is required.  Talk to a  technician certified in Commercial Carpet Maintenance and ask what is best for your circumstances.

Misconception #4:

I will save money by just ignoring information about regular carpet care.  If I clean the carpets every 4 or 5 yrs they’ll be okay.

Maintaining carpets from the date of purchase is an investment. It is not an avoidable cost.  Carpets that are not cared for can cost a business now, and later.  Now - soiled carpets leave unfavorable impressions on clients.  (Very often the public perception of professionals such as doctors and lawyers can be affected by factors like cleanliness.)  Later - soiled carpets do not have the long service life they were designed for  and will be an unexpected liability when premature wear is no longer hidden and cannot be tolerated.

Commercial Carpet Care is a highly technical field requiring extensive resources, including an inventory of specialized equipment.  If you have questions about your carpets, talk to the proven, experienced professionals at Graham’s.
