Ask the Builder - Gary Demke

May 2005

Hello again from all of us at Amron Homes. Last time I wrote about new home warranties. Hopefully I convinced some out there that the risk is just too great to not have a warranty that is backed up by a third party. I left off with the thought "if you were convinced that a warranty backed builder was the only way to go, then which warranty program is best?"

Firstly, lets understand that all warranty providers are insurance companies. They provide a "policy" for a fee. It works much like any other insurance policy you already have. If claims are made against a policy, the fees go up. If you make a claim it is handled like any other insurance request. You probably have a story or two to tell if you've ever had to make a claim and that story doesn't always have a happy ending.

Twenty-five years ago, Amron Homes was faced with the dilemma of which insurance company we wanted to associate ourselves with. We obviously made the right decision, because 25 years later, we are still with that same insurer (every year since 1980).
Did we make the right choice and do what was best for our customers? You bet we did!!!

The Alberta New Home Warranty was Amron's #1 choice hands down and here's why. Firstly, they are a non-profit company and they just don't accept everyone as an insured (only one of every five applicants makes the grade). Because of their stringent selection process of acquiring only the best builders they are confident enough to double the industry warranty of 5 years to 10 years.

So much more than just insurance is offered to the new home buyer when their builder is a member. I'll list them in point form to keep the article short.
1. When you, the customer, places a deposit on a new home, it automatically received deposit protection of up to $60,000.00.
2. In the unlikely event a registered builder fails to complete the home as contracted, the warranty program provides protection up to $30,000.00.
3. The warranty program provides protection for the structural integrity of your new home for up to 10 years and up to $ 60,000.00.
4. Should repairs be required where you and your family must find temporary accommodation, the program will reimburse you up to $6000.00.
5. They offer mediation and arbitration services.
6. They insist members be educated in the latest building technologies.
7. The Alberta New Home Warranty Program is a large "think tank" of knowledge and expertise and available to any builder member who may have a construction problem he just can't seem to solve by himself.
8. All memberships are reviewed yearly to weed out any builders whose standards are dropping.

So now you know why Amron Homes chooses to remain in the program. Building homes is so much more than just profit. Call Amron with any questions at 548-3137.
