Ask the Builder - Gary Demke

March 2005

Imagine owning a home that has an 'EnerGuide'. As you know, that is the label that comes on new refrigerators and tells you how energy efficient it is. As a matter of fact, all new appliances of all sorts come with an EnerGuide. And yes, coming in mid-April Amron Homes will proudly be displaying the EnerGuide label on many of its new homes.

Finally, a program to let consumers know the quality of the product that they are buying. Especially an investment as large as a new home. It will be another great aid in choosing the best product, home and Builder for you.

The EnerGuide label can only come from Built Green Alberta Builder members, and only those members can build a Built Green Alberta home.

The program concentrates on four separate and distinct target areas:

  1. energy efficiency
  2. indoor air quality
  3. resource use
  4. overall environmental impact

Energy efficiency relates to insulations, air sealing, and specific product use that promises improved energy efficient qualities.

Indoor air quality relates to the air systems' air filtering ability, it's moisture content and ensuring it is completely free of formaldehyde and other contaminates.

Resource use refers to how efficiently the home uses its water, gas and electricity. In the construction of the home, it encourages the use of recycled products and reusable components.

And last… Environmental impact, meaning what the home exhausts into the air, ground and water.

This program was established by The Office of Energy Efficiency of Natural Resources Canada and is administered and managed by the Calgary Region Home Builder's Association.
