| September 2004 Q: What is an IICRC Certified Firm? A: An IICRC Certified Firm is a firm that has demonstrated the intent to provide superior services and the will to follow through on such a commitment. Basically it is fulfilling a promise to provide the best service possible, protect the public interest, and operate an exemplary business. Certified Firms must document such items as adequate liability insurance, WCB, and a current business license. A Certified Firm expressly agrees to comply with the IICRC Certified Firm Code of Ethics. This includes such things as "avoiding conflicts of interest, and the appearance of conflicts of interest." A Certified Firm promises to abide by the Better Business Bureau, and accept the conclusions and recommendations of the arbitrator. Properly certified Techs must be used for the services provided, or the client informed. Deceptive marketing practices must not just be avoided, but accurate information about prices, services and products must be provided. Should a Certified Firm contravene the IICRC standards for operation, the IICRC Certified Firm and Registrant Complaint Committee can take action against the firm. The basic standards are stringent enough that the majority of carpet cleaners do not even attempt to become certified. Many carpet cleaners have personal certification for things such as carpet or upholstery care. Such certification is commendable. But, to be a Certified Technician is quite different from a Certified Firm. A detailed complaint resolution policy must be in place. The above mentioned issues of insurance, licensing, etc must be addressed. Continuing education and improvement programs must be documented and followed through. And the Certified Firm Code of Ethics must be agreed to. As an illustration, hiring a carpet cleaner is like lending money to someone based on an understanding. Hiring a Certified Firm is like trusting someone who has provided collateral. The commitment is real and protects your interests. Only IICRC Certified Firms are legally entitled to display the IICRC logo on their vehicles and in their advertisements. That includes the phone book. A certified technician is not entitled to display the logo according to IICRC policy on trademark use. The firm must be certified. Certified Firms, as part of their commitment to ethics, must "Actively participate in the monitoring of usage of the IICRC registered trademark and trade name by other firms and technicians."
