Q: I just read an advertisement for a new type of carpet cleaning system.
It featured benefits that appealed to me. How can I make sure it is the
right one for me home?
A: According to an old proverb, "The inexperienced believes everything
he hears, but the shrewd one considers his steps." Remember that
everyone who advertises a product or service wants to put it in the best
light possible - it doesn't make them dishonest or shady. It just means
they are enthusiastic about the work they do. With that in mind, use discretion.
The best advice for somone looking to have quality services for their
home is to educate themselves. Look up industry related public education
web sites - don't confuse them with advertisements by carpet cleaning
companies. Public info sites by the IICRC, ASCR and The Carpet & Rug
Institute are good places to start. These sites will give you solid information
on how to qualify a cleaner; methods used; and even scams to watch out
for.
The one message you will notice when you have spent some time researching
the subject, is that the quality of service is tied to the professional
committment of the cleaner. Usually this is demonstrated by a high level
of formal industry training.
The IICRC Carpet Cleaning Standard S001 lists five industry approved methods
for cleaning carpets and upholstery. There are some variations such as
special cleaning agents. But the services offered by all carpet cleaners
will fall into one of the following categories:
• hot water extraction
• bonnett or absorbent pad
• dry foam
• shampoo
• absorbant compound
Ask a prospective cleaner which of the above categories his method falls
into. If he doesn't know such basic information, are you going to be comfortable
with his workmanship?
Your best choice will be a cleaning professional who offers all five methods.
Each one has good and bad points. A real expert will be able to evaluate
your needs and match up the appropriate method - not jut tell you that
the one he has beats them all.
