| August 2004 Q: I notice that in all your articles you talk about using certified cleaners. Is it really that big a deal? A: Yes. It is that big a deal. There are very few tangible ways to sort out professional service providers from those who are not. In North America, the benchmark for establishing this sort of independantly verified industry standing, is the IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, & Restoration Certification). The certification programs followed by the IICRC teach professional cleaners how to use a variety of cleaning technologies effectively, safely, and ethically. The result is an increasing degree of competency throughout the industry. Many mfgr warranty books now make mention of the IICRC in their care and maintenance sections. Some even require a certificate from a certified cleaner to validate warranties. If you turn to the yellow pages under carpet cleaning, you will notice many carpet cleaners want you to know that they have certification. Why? Pride of workmanship. These folks took the time to attend courses, pay for them, and pass their exams. Those who have achieved journeyman and then master status, have spent years of effort and thousands of dollars in order to offer you a level of expertise that is worthy of the value you place on your home and family. The IICRC certifies technicians in a number of areas. These include: carpet care, commercial carpet maintenance, upholstery & fine fabric care, flood & fire restoration, mold remediation, health & safety, and many, many other areas. Make sure the technician working on your home or office is actually certified for the services being performed. Does it make a difference to a home or business owner if a cleaner is credentialled? Well, think on just one question for a minute. If a technician doesn't learn about potential problems in a formal setting, where is he going to? If you answered on the job you're right. Where is his job? At your home or office. Now - how often can you afford to pay for someone else's mistakes? This is just one factor to consider. There are many others. Certified Techs have to keep accruing education credits. They never stop learning and improving their services! A warning: Some unethical cleaners will advertise that they have certification. Some have never been certified, and others have allowed their credentials to lapse. Protect yourself. If you are unsure, you can call the IICRC toll free at 1-800-835-4624. The operator will verify a cleaner's status, or provide you with the name of a Certified Firm in your area. Only IICRC Certified Firms are allowed to use the IICRC logo. Certified Firms and Certified Technicians are two different things. Watch for a coming article on Certified Firms which will explain the advantages of being familiar with an IICRC Certified Firm.
